Care

Electro-acupuncture

A gentle current passed between two acupuncture needles for a few minutes, while you rest.

Electro-acupuncture adds a small, steady current to needles already in place. You feel a light tapping or buzzing, and we turn it down or off whenever you say.

Who usually comes

  • People with a long list of tight spots in one area

  • People who want a steadier feeling than needles alone

  • Athletes who have tried acupuncture and want a change

A visit

What a visit is like, in order

  1. 01

    Step 1: We talk

About 15 minutes about your calendar, and whether anything rules this out.

  2. 02

    Step 2: The needles

A few thin needles go in at the points we chose together.

  3. 03

    Step 3: The current

We connect two needles and raise the current slowly until you feel a light tapping.

  4. 04

    Step 4: A plan

Before you leave, we say what we did and what we suggest next.

Good to know

Before and after

  • What you may feel afterward

Some people feel sleepy or a little sore. A light buzzing at the points is normal during the session and stops when we turn the current off.

  • Tell us first

A pacemaker or other implanted device, since we do not use a current then. Also pregnancy, blood thinners or a bleeding disorder, lymph node removal, a history of seizures, or a fear of needles.

  • How many visits

Your acupuncturist suggests a plan around your training on the first visit. It is a suggestion, not a promise, and results vary. You can change it or stop at any time.

  • What it does not do, and when to see a doctor

It does not replace your doctor, your physical therapist or emergency care. See a doctor first for sudden severe pain, chest pain, new weakness or numbness, a joint that gives way, or loss of bladder or bowel control. In an emergency, call 911.
